A Brutal Killing in Baltimore, and the Blame Game Is On

If there was any doubt that Baltimore's legal system is a miserable failure, it should have been put to rest with what we've learned about the murder of Stephen Pitcairn. Late Sunday evening, a day away from his 24th birthday and just back from a visit to his sister in New York, he was walking up St. Paul Street from the train station to his Charles Village apartment. As he walked, he talked on the phone with his mother, Gwen, of Jupiter, Fla., who heard him being accosted, heard a male voice say, "Shut up," and listened as her son...

Memphis Educator Wants Corporal Punishment in 'War Zone' Schools

Unruly students have turned some Memphis classrooms into war zones where teachers have been subjected to verbal and physical attacks, according to a school board commissioner who has introduced a resolution to reinstate corporal punishment. “Teachers, for several years now, have been increasingly agitated by the lack of classroom discipline,” said School Board Commissioner Kenneth Whalum. “It’s out of hand, man.” Memphis city schools banned corporal punishment five years ago. Since then, according to Whalum, teachers have been subjected to out-of-control kids. “They are being abused,” he said. “Teachers have been hospitalized after getting attacked by middle schoolers. It’s a...

Black Flight Hits Detroit

DETROIT—This shrinking city needs to hang on to people like Johnette Barham: taxpaying, middle-class professionals who invest in local real estate, work and play downtown, and make their home here. Ms. Barham just left. And she's not coming back. In seven years as a homeowner in Detroit, she endured more than 10 burglaries and break-ins at her house and a nearby rental property she owned. Still, she defied friends' pleas to leave as she fortified her home with locks, bars, alarms and a dog. Then, a week before Christmas, someone torched the house and destroyed almost everything she owned.

False Dreams and Broken Promises: The Wasteful Federal Investment in Urban Mass Transit

Over the past quarter century, U.S. taxpayers have pumped more than $100 billion in subsidies into the nation's urban mass transit systems. That massive taxpayer investment has paid for urban public transportation systems that fewer and fewer Americans are using. Incredibly, mass transit ridership is lower today--not only as a percentage of commuter trips taken but also in absolute numbers of riders-- than it was in the early 1960s. Despite the low and declining use of bus and rail systems, federal grants for urban transit now appear to be as popular as ever: bills before both houses of Congress would...

Drive-Thru Taser Incident At Wendy's

Drive-Thru Taser Incident At Wendy's MAY 17--Angered that drive-thru workers at a Wendy's botched her order, a Florida woman stormed the Daytona Beach restaurant this morning and tried to tase an employee with a stun gun. Melanese Reid, 20, reportedly became enraged after fast food workers failed to provide her with the requisite number of mustard and mayonnaise packets. After Hill and Katrina Bryant, 23, argued with drive-thru employee Jason Hill (and called him "bitch" and "faggot") Hill "told them that they were childish and to leave," according to a charging affidavit prepared by cops.
